FLASHING CLOCKS mean you have a Safe, Efficient Power System
If you come home and find your ckock-radio flashing "12:00," its not necessarily a signal that your
power has been out.
Most electrical disturbances last just a moment. A tree branch may have brushed against a power
line or an animal may have scampered across it. When these things happen, your electric system is
designed to prevent serious damage by operating special protective devices or systems. If these
devices didn't exist, or failed to operate, then the power lines would be damaged resulting in a
prolonged power outage while repairs are made.
When something lands on a power line, an oil circuit recloser(OCR) opens to interrupt the flow
of electricity, much as circuit breakers protect your home's electircal system. Once the equipment
senses that the problem has passed or no longer exists, the OCR closes and electric power is restored.
On a rainy or windy day, this can happen repeatedly.
Still, it's better to have the protection of this system than run the risk of a damaged line
that will put far more homes out of service for a much longer period of time while repairs have to be made.
These devices also help protect the system from power surges caused by lightning, Its a good idea to protect
expensive electronic gear, such as computers and major appliances, with surge suppressors and to consider
buying uninterruptible power supply systems for computers to avoid lost power, even for a second.
So, if you find your clock-radio flashing "12:00" it means your electric distribution system operated as it
should and the interruption might have only been for an instant.
